OUR HEART BEHIND WHO WE ARE
We believe that Jesus Christ has called First Baptist Chickasaw to be something special-not just the church you see on the corner- but a church that Jesus uses in new ways to significantly change lives. In the 1980’s, we were a church that ran 1,200 people on Sundays, now we run around 50. A lot of things have changed in our church’s history. Now, we are a group of believers that are willing to roll our sleeves up and do the work Jesus has called us to. We don’t celebrate attendance numbers or weekly giving. We celebrate baptisms and those being called to revitalize or plant churches.
WE WORK INTENTIONALLY TO BECOME A HEALTHY FAMILY.
We don’t want people to feel like guests around here for long. We want to invite them into the family. We realize family can be a dirty word for some due to their upbringing. But, through His church Christ teaches us how to become a healthy family, linked together by our dependence on Jesus. Family members enjoy all sorts of benefits, but they also accept their responsibilities. They take ownership of their house, siblings, values. It’s personal. When you’re family, church isn’t just a place you sometimes go, it’s a group of people & a set of values you devote yourself to.
WE WANT OUR CHURCH FAMILY TO REFLECT THE DIVERSITY OF HUMANITY.
If you could stroll up the street from our campus into a restaurant full of people that wouldn’t feel welcome at our church, we believe we’re doing it wrong. We want to be a place where the entire cross-section of our community feels loved, wanted & accepted—regardless of the color of their skin, the number of commas in their income, the way they dress or talk, the past experiences they’ve had, or the hurts, habits, hang-ups, and addictions that may currently exist in their lives.
WE WON'T WAIT FOR SOMEONE ELSE TO REACH OUR FRIENDS.
We believe everyone has a built-in desire to live in harmony with God & find acceptance inside a loving community that genuinely cares about them. We believe that God placed you in proximity to the people in every area of your life to demonstrate the love of Jesus, invest in their lives & invite them to be a part of a caring community. We don’t sit back & hope God will send someone along to do what he’s called us to.
WE REACH NEW AND DIFFERENT PEOPLE, BY TRYING NEW AND DIFFERENT THINGS.
We want to reach those no one else is reaching. And to attract people who aren’t attracted to what already exists, you’ve got to step out & try some new things. That’s why we do many things in non-traditional ways. We’re not interested just doing what’s always been done just to keep people we already have. We’re interested in connecting the disconnected and guiding them to pursue God.
WE WANT TO BE HEALTHY and HEALTHY THINGS GROW.
A commitment to grow is a commitment to consistently step out of what’s comfortable. Most healthy habits aren’t easy or comfortable at first. But we commit ourselves to them because we know the results are worth it. That’s why we aren’t afraid of pushing ourselves out of our comfort zones to grow ourselves & our church by showing up, serving, giving, helping, loving & sacrificing now for the sake of where we want to be later.
WE ARE THE FIRST TO SERVE and THE LAST TO BE SERVED.
We’ve all been places where we felt right at home right away. And that feeling it didn’t happen magically all on its own. People created it. They set their needs aside long enough to consider & provide for yours. We want to be these types of people. We don’t cross our arms & demand that the church to cater to all our wants, needs & desires. We aren’t afraid to open our hearts & get our hands dirty to practically take on the work of serving others first.
WE GROW MORE IN CIRCLES THAN WE DO IN ROWS.
We were made to live lives of connection—with God & with others. We’re better, smarter, healthier, happier, & more fulfilled together. If your only experience of church is to sit in a row in a service, you will hear great sermons & songs, but you won’t tap into the biggest benefit we have to offer—real relationships with other imperfect people just like you. It’s when we step out of the rows we’re in & circle up our lives with others that real growth occurs.
WE GIVE UP THINGS WE LOVE FOR THINGS WE LOVE EVEN MORE.
We strive to keep our priorities in line. We realize that the enemy of being great is settling for just good enough. And sometimes the only way to make way for something truly great is to give up something good. We believe Christ consistently challenges us to rethink the ways we’re spending our time, money & energy; and as we grow in maturity, discover where he’s asking us to divert them from investing only in our momentary enjoyment to the greater pursuit of the expansion of His permanent Kingdom.
WE WON'T TAKE OUR GIFTS TO THE GRAVE.
We believe we’re all gifted with unique talents & abilities. But we don’t just want to utilize them to serve ourselves, or even stop at using them to serve our community. We want to teach & train others how to serve our community with us. We want to impart our knowledge, experiences & expertise to people around us who will hopefully one day duplicate what we did even better than we did it. We believe that all of us should always be investing in somebody else.
WE ARE CALLED TO BE OURSELVES, NOT COPY SOMEONE ELSE.
We have a clear understanding of who God has called us to be as a church. We are aware that other places do things differently & even get great results. And while we’re always interested in learning from others, we want to be who God has called US to be. And sometimes that means we will do things others don’t do & we won’t do some things that others do. Just because something’s a good idea elsewhere doesn’t mean it’s God best for here.
